How do you assess your web designer’s SEO capabilities.

The problem is that most web designers claim to be search engine optimizers,  while in fact they are not!  They even go further and claim that they will “SEO” your website with its design all in one cute little package, all included in the price.

Some even claim that all their websites are already search engine optimized when they design it. 
You need to be very careful with these claims.  They are mostly bogus claims from designers who do not have the first inkling of what SEO is all about.  Not everyone is like this of course. 

Because it is mostly an unfounded claim and this misrepresentation will kill your website you need to verify it.

This is how you check some of the elements in a website’s SEO:

This will be a three step approach:

  1. You need to determine if this website has a “page rank”. 
  2. Secondly you will need to determine where in the google search results this website features.
  3. Do a traffic ranking check on the claimed website.

How to determine a website's page rank

This is fairly simple, and there are several sites on the web that do this and they are all free.  Just enter the website you want to check into the box below and click on the “check page rank” button.

The result will return and it could be any one of the following:

N/A        Not available – this means the website is very new or has no page rank or has been removed from google’s index. Most of the time it usually means the website is very new.

0 – 10    The higher the number the better the page rank, 10 being the absolute best and N/A being the lowest.
Keep in mind that unless you are the amazon.com of the world or the yahoo you will most likely never see a complete 10.  

Page rank is your status as website in the eyes of the search engine, which in turn reflects your standing on the internet over time.

Being a N/A is like being a nobody – that means you have no standing.  From a zero (0) you do have a standing.  Several factors influence the standing and the standing develops over a lengthy period.

You will never receive a page rank of even 1 within any short space of time, it will take many months to develop. A legion of factors influences this, which I will cover in my next article.

Page rank bottom line – It determines where you will show up in the search results – This increases or decreases your traffic. It is not the be all and end all of SEO, it is only the start.

Where in the results does this site feature- How to do a search result check?

You should do a search result check on google in order to see if the website designer's client's web pages actually rank anywhere for the field of application the site is marketed in.

To give an example of how you would do this, lets assume the website this web designer has developed, sells carpets online.  Because there are literally millions of these sites on the internet, you would have to search on google in the correct manner or it will not help.

To assist you in this if the website is for example in south Africa, you will select “pages from south Africa” on google – You can also set this in the advanced search options on google located at the Region Option – if you would like to do it from that page.

This will limit your results and it is important.

Now you must define your search query.  Think for moment, if you where a customer, and if you would be looking for a website that sells carpets online, how would you go about searching on google. 
What is the search query you would enter into google?  Just to be of assistance here, it will not be only the word  “carpets”.

In search engine terms we call “carpet” or its plural “carpets” the core term.  Core terms are by nature too vague and you will receive millions of irrelevant links that all has to do with carpets but may not be what you are looking for.

If you would like to test this, go to google and type in carpets and see what you get.  It will be anything from carpet cleaning to carpet manufacturing to whatever you can think up. 

Was that what you where looking for – Obviously not!  You want to be more specific.  You where wanting to buy a carpet – and also not just any carpet – a Persian carpet.

My intention here is not to write an entire article on how search engine technology works, but to give you an idea of what you should be looking out for when assessing a web designer’s claims of SEO.  In later articles I will be covering all these topics in great detail.  For now lets assume your search query will look like this:

Online store Persian carpet Cape Town

It consists of four grouped terms for good reason. You could have constructed the search query like this: Online store selling Persian carpet in cape town.

Google would "parse" it into the first query I showed you and the results would be similar.  If you leave out Cape Town, you would get the results for the entire South Africa. If you do not enter South Africa as a regional search option you would get the results for the entire web.

By doing this you could check to see where in the search results this site features as you widen your search from Cape Town, where this store is based, up to the entire world wide web.  You would see how its standing changes every time.
