Validating your web designers SEO capability

Previously in this article we discussed:

  • Who are you dealing with?
    1. Looking at your web designer’s portfolio.
    2. Assess your web designer’s  SEO capability?
        • Now we will continue with
        • Where in the search results does the website feature
        • Doing a traffic volume check on a website?
    3. Speaking to your prospective web designers existing clients.
  • Can your web designer cater for your needs?

How do you find this website amongst all the results?

It will most certainly not appear at the top of the results.  If it does, well then you know you have a web designer that does know what he is doing.  But before we get too excited, do the same check for a number of his sites and in all fairness do not base en entire decision on one site only.

In my research I have found plenty of web designers who ranks high for their own websites, but their clients are nowhere to be found. The reason could be that they did not optimize their own websites themselves, or alternatively they did not properly researched their clients needs and customer base. Either way, it does not matter what the web designer has done or arranged for himself, it matters what he does for his clients.

If this website you are searching for is not at the top of the search results you will need to find it in between the results somewhere.

You could manually scan the results – this is not advised as it could be quite tedious – I recommend you do the following:

In the advanced options page on google search, set the results so it returns 100 results per page.  After you have entered your search query, and have clicked on the advanced search button, the results would appear. Now in the browser of your choice:

Using internet explorer: Click on (The Menu) – Edit and then on Find on this page or short cut (Alt + F) and type in the url of the site you are checking.

Using Fire Fox: Also Click on Edit – Find On This page (or short cut Alt + F ) and then type  the url of the site you are checking (example http://thesiteiamchecking.com/)

Do this for every result page, till you find the website, run out of pages or get tired doing it.

Note where you found this website and if you did find it at all.
What we will learn here is the web designer claims to do SEO.  So how far did his search engine optimization take his client’s website? Would you have landed on this website if you where searching for this clients services?

You be the judge of that.

Do a "web traffic quantity" and "web traffic rank" check on the claimed website

You can also do a traffic ranking check on this website you are looking into.  The traffic rank will also show the page rank but will additionally tell you how many visitors this website actually receives daily.  This is a clear indication of how relevant this designer’s search engine optimization is to the searches that are actually conducted.

This tells you that this designers SEO does work and people do land and end up at his client’s websites.  People use many different search terms to find websites and understanding how people search, determines how successful you will be at achieving high traffic volumes.

This tells you in broad over a spectrum of terms how well the website performs in general.
To do this check, click on this link provided here and type the website’s url you want to look into.

Got to Alexa

Speak to your prospective web designers existing clients.

You would not go and rush out to a dealership buying the first car that looks like something you might like.  Similarly it would be foolish to choose a web designer based on only a pretty website.

Using the car example, you would enquire from family and friends and most importantly, from people who have owned such a car, about it.  You would ask them many questions.

The same applies to a web designer.  In this case enquiring from their existing client base would be a good place to start.  You will be making enquiries to determine:

  1. What kind of web designing studio this web designer is.
  2. How their existing clients experienced them, which includes their service levels.
  3. How flexible they were in the design process, and much more.

Knowing that you would have an idea of what their track record is like and what you could expect is a great place to start.. Unfortunately it does not end there.  If it was that simple I would not be writing this article.

How many times in the past did you make enquires about an item you were going to purchase, and the enquiries where all positive, but you ended up being terribly disappointed in your purchase?

So we need to dig deeper.

Your needs

Understand and research your own needs.

Your understanding of web development and what you want to accomplish in having website developed is key here.  You need to understand what it is that your business does.  Some of the questions that come to mind are…

Are you selling services or products?  - That could determine if your new website should be more functional than visual  -or - more visual than functional.

Who are your customers?  - Again that could influence the entire design of your site – Young teenagers require different design in websites from adult intellectuals.

Where your customers are mostly located.  Geographic’s has a huge influence on your marketing campaign – which has a huge influence on your site’s design.

What is the size of their income?  Do they mostly use broadband or dial-up.  The slower the connection the fewer graphic you should use.

Are you expanding operations or starting operations? – The list is endless…..

In nature, form follows function.  Function does NOT follow form.  An object looks and appears the way it does because it has to perform a specific function.  The visual design (Form) follows the function of the website.  Not the other way around.

Understanding this analogy implies that visual aesthetics is NOT the criteria for successful web design, function IS.  The most successful websites follows this philosophy – Just think of Google!
